Just when you thought the presents had all been opened and the good times had all been had, our resident love gurus B-Jones and Shay Shay come to the rescue. So now, for your viewing pleasure, I give you the team behind “Lovers Late Night” doing what they do best: dishing on the dating dirt. In this episode, they discuss online dating. And now it’s time for me to do what I do best: digress. So any who, I’ve always been intrigued by this. I mean, I don’t know if I’d go ahead and take the plunge and sign up for one of the sites, but it seems easier to me. I mean, you can only feign interest and make small talk at resturants, clubs and bars for so long before dating just becomes total drudgery. Online dating would seem to take that edge off: you already would know if you have interests, hobbies, etc., in common before you even meet. That would certainly give you something to talk about. WECB Award Winners!

It is with great pride that I introduce the first annual WECB award winners. Everyone worked so hard this past semester, and with so many great shows and DJs, picking the winners was a difficult task. I must say, however, that with free pizza provided by Crazy Doughs at the awards ceremony, isn’t everyone a winner (the answer to the question is yes). As an aside, I was crossing Tremont street with said piece of pizza, when a stiff wind almost blew it clear away from my hands. Being the quick thinking, ever improvisational DJ that I am, I quickly used all of my moxie to save that heavenly peice of pizza from ending up in the street. The moral of the story? Well, there isn’t one, but some stories are just too cool not to share. But enough about me, let’s get to the award winners:

Pleasant pop rock with indie and folk influences. Co-written by John Lennon’s son, the song is a tribute to his childhood friend Lucy Vodden (the Lucy of ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’) who recently died of lupus-related disease.
Add, but could be easily persuaded otherwise.

Say Anything – Say Anything
More emo-y tracks from the Los Angeles punk pop rock group. Streamlined and tightly-produced, the album will please their fanbase.

The sixth album from the Canadian indie pop duo, Tegan & Sara take on a punchier sound with Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla as their producer. Has a rich, yet simple sound to it.

Learning Music Monthly – This May Also Be It
Childish indie pop with heavy use of simple synth riffs functioning as hooks. Nothing special, bland almost to the point of being ear-offensive.

Dan Vaillancourt – Lovely Distractions
Kind of sounds like a Tom Petty-wannabe at times. Doesn’t grab my ear.

Animals, Shirts and Surveys, Oh My!

Pandas, Mooses and Headphones, oh my! WECB’s promo shirts have taken over campus, appearing on nearly everyone who got their hands on one at the Promo Team’s recent stint in the campus center. There, over 100 students voiced their opinions on what they love about WECB. We wanted to hear what you liked, what we could change, and what you wanted more of. In exchange, everyone who partook in the survey got a pretty awesome shirt FOR FREE. Fabriclive 47 – Toddla T
Mix number 47 from the London-based Fabric nightclub’s monthly mix series, this time featuring -based DJ Toddla T. This mix has more of a reggae vibe to it than many of the other mixes we’ve recieved from Fabric in the past— this time with a distinct dancehall electro groove featuring elements of Jamacian hip-hop and R&B. Pretty different from most of the stuff we listen to at the music staff, thus I recomment Adding it.

Holy Ghost – “I Will Come Back” EP
Recently signed to the iconic New York DFA Records, “I Will Come Back” is the debut single from the Holy Ghost duo. As typical for the DFA, Holy Ghost blends retro 80s production standards with modern techno and a pinch of disco, creating a sound that fans of other DFA artists like LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, The Rapture, or Shit Robot will likely enjoy.

Have Yourself A Meaty Little Christmas-Review

As Christmastime looms over us, the flood of holiday music has already begun. The question then becomes, what, if any, Christmas music should I listen to? As much as I would like my answer to be “none of it,” I can no longer make that claim. This year, the jolly folks at Adult Swim have provided us with Have Yourself a Meaty Little Christmas, an Aqua Teen Hunger Force Christmas album. I think this proves that there is a God.

The album opens with a rousing rendition of the classic “Feliz Navidad” being sung by the four main characters of the show. The instrumentation remains the same but the song lyrics quickly about-face to “Meat Navi-wad, chicken quesadilla with the mild sauce.” The rest of the song is literally an order of Mexican food set to the popular tune.

Perhaps the best part about the album is its ability to have both traditional Christmas songs mixed with the off-beat humor of Aqua Teen Hunger Force and original material that captures a similar experience. Included on the album are gems such as “Hark! The Herald Angels Rap,” a song that manages to sh*t on Creed and promote black Jesus to the scratch beat rhythms of old-school rap and the white-as-mayonnaise Christmas song that serves as its inspiration.

Other highlights are the retelling of the Christmas story by Master Shake, “’Twas the Night Before Jesus,” the rollin’ Country Christmas ramble “Santa Left a Booger in My Stocking” which features guest artist Neko Case singing with Meatwad about the joy of receiving presents for Christmas, and the Jersey schmo styling’s of Carl singing “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” a song about football, masturbation, and holiday cheer.

In the final analysis, the album may only be played once a year but it’s worth having around for the gag. As long as Aqua Teen Hunger Force continues to be funny, so will this album, and as long as Christmas music regrettably remains popular, this will serve as a beautifully gift-wrapped middle finger to the bland holiday music that usually dominates.
